Some days are more exciting that others. We all get into periods of time when we’re doing the same things over and over. This can get quite boring, but when there’s work to be done we need to overcome the boredom. When these days come, I rely on the simple pleasures in life to keep me going. These aren’t things that rely on luck. You can plan certain luxuries or event throughout your day. This will keep your motivation up and allow you to plow through uninteresting work.
Coffee
It’s no secret. I love coffee. When I don’t want to get up and tackle the day’s tasks, I rely on my love of coffee to get me up. Even if you’re not a coffee fan, you have something you like to consume. Maybe you’re a fan of tea or love anything pumpkin spice. Throw your favorite snack or beverage into your morning routine to make the morning feel more eventful.
Find New Music
There’s something really exciting about finding a new band you love. It’s even more fun when I discover a song I love only to realize it has existed for my entire life. Dig through Spotify or Apple Music and find a new artist who excites you. Or listen to your favorite album from high school, the one you haven’t listened to in years. No matter how you do it, having great tunes makes life seem less dull. But be warned, you will get stuck with another earworm in your head.
Plan Your Outfit
The older I get, the less fun I have when picking out my outfit. In the morning, I don’t want to think about it. I’d rather just get moving with my day and I end up wearing the same five outfits. Even then, I spend a few minutes staring at my closet and making up my mind. Knowing I don’t have to make these decisions, simple as they may be, makes getting up a little easier. I could even try to create a new outfit using older items. Regardless of how I do it, I’d rather spend the five minutes before bed than after waking up.
Declutter
Nothing makes me more motivated to work than a clean workspace. Having stacks of documents or notes on my desk can be a huge distraction. It’s work the couple of minutes to put these items away and organize my life so I’m not distracted. The decluttering doesn’t even have to be physical. A digital declutter can be just as relaxing. Save all open documents, drag icons into folders, close background applications. Eliminate all distractions so you can stay focused.
Celebrate Success
If you’re stressed over a task, that mean you care about it to some degree. While I certainly think you should practice methods to destress, knowing you conquered a challenge task is very rewarding. Acknowledge when you’re making progress and recognize the progress of others. Once you’ve reached the end of a task, it’s might be worth giving yourself a small reward. A snack or a break feels a lot better with the clarity of knowing you’re gone with a specific responsibility.
You’re In Control
Ultimately, you are able to shake up your routine and make boring days more interesting. These simple pleasures are completely free but make a huge difference in your day. By taking control of your routine you will find yourself less stressed and more productive. This is a healthy approach to dealing with challenge situations and an easy way to overcome boredom.
